What is the study about?
The GILD study is testing two ways to monitor blood sugar levels during labour in women/birthing people with gestational diabetes.
Who can take part in the study?
Women/birthing people with gestational diabetes mellitus
What is being tested in the study?
A ‘more relaxed’ method of monitoring blood sugar levels during labour where blood sugars are checked every 2-4 hours with the aim to keep blood sugar levels between 4 and 10 mmol/L
What is this being compared to?
Frequent monitoring of blood sugar levels where blood sugars are checked every hour with the aim to keep blood sugar levels between 4 and 7 mmol/L
What are we trying to find out?
We want to find out if a more relaxed approach to monitoring blood sugars during labour in women with gestation diabetes is no worse than frequent monitoring in terms of the rates of babies born with low blood sugars and/or requiring admission to neonatal units.
How many patients do we need?
1630 patients
