Summary

We used a comprehensive, mixed methods approach to identify potential trial site metrics and to achieve consensus about the final set, adapting methods that are recommended by the COMET Initiative for developing core outcome sets in health care http://www.comet-initiative.org/  Consensus was reached on a final set of eight key perfomance metrics. 

These were in three domains:

(1) recruitment and retention

(2) data quality

(3) protocol compliance

We have created a simple tool for effective visual reporting of the metrics which is freely available and could be used alongside existing systems.
